Cleveland County Historical Society

In 1967, historically minded citizens of Norman, Oklahoma came together to establish an historical society with the purpose of preserving the history of Cleveland County, and to “promote knowledge and stimulate popular interest in historical study and research.” Members of the newly founded historical society also believed that it was important to preserve historical structures and designate historical neighborhoods so that future generations of Oklahomans would know about the people and the community that established their city, county and state.

In keeping with the historic preservation movement in the early 1970s, members of the historical society formed a committee to meet with the Mayor and City Council to discuss a joint partnership in acquiring an historical house to serve as a museum that represented Norman from 1889 to 1907. The City bought the Moore-Lindsay House at 508 N. Peters in 1973 and arranged funding to restore the house to its original character. The Moore-Lindsay House is of Queen Anne architecture and represents Norman during the Victorian/Industrial era in America. In 1974, The City of Norman asked the historical society to become guardians of the Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum. A Board of Directors governs the Cleveland County Historical Society.
